Alpha and Omega

A question that many of us may have pondered about at some point in our lives is what happens when we die. As human beings, we imagine and think of things in a finite sense. We are used to cycles, to beginnings and endings, to birth and death. We remember our children’s milestones- their first word, their first steps, their first smile etc. It is of little surprise that we are inclined to think of spiritual things in a similar way.

God says in Revelation 1:8, “I am the Alpha and Omega… who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty”. It is difficult for our human minds to comprehend that God existed before creation of the world. He is the Beginning, the Alpha, the Origin, and the Creator. Our spiritual transformation occurs when God intervenes and becomes the Alpha of our lives. He is there at the start of the day, the start of a new journey, the start of a new life or a new career. He delights and rejoices when we place him first and foremost in our lives. His hand is ever-ready to guide us when we seek him concerning any major decision in our lives, for he knows what is best for us.

Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet. It is synonymous with conclusion, culmination and perfection. Our God has the final say and we, as Christians, should never forget that our earthly lives will come to an end and that there will be a day of final judgement. God will sit on his throne and will restore his people; he will have the final word. He is the writer and concluder of our book called Life. As is said in 2 Corinthians 2:9 “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him,” We rest assured in and look forward to this hope of eternal life in him.

God, our Alpha, knew of us even before we were conceived. He knew our spiritual journeys even before they began. He is preparing an ending for us which is difficult for our human minds to fathom. An infinite future awaits us and his infinite wisdom determines how it will all end. That is the beauty of our Omega. Is he the Alpha and Omega in your life today?
